Why GIS? : Geographic Information Systems are used
to view, query and analyze a wide variety of information
within a map environment. GIS is built upon the
concept of map layers, such as aerial photography,
satellite imagery, scanned maps, plats, urveys, roads,
municipal boundaries and literally hundreds of other
features. A simple example of a GIS is Google Earth
or Microsoft Bing Maps. All of the layers of information
contained within these simple on-line map viewers was
generated by organizations using GIS. This includes
Federal, State and Local government agencies and
private sector commercial data providers. By using
GIS to visualize a project area, users can quickly determine
how the various map layers impact the project.
Maps can be generated in hard-copy or electronic
format for plans, reports, permitting and public meetings
